  • AVG Free Antivirus is free for non-commercial home use. Paid, commercial versions also available.
  • Avast Free Antivirus is free for non-commercial home use. Paid, commercial, versions are also available.
  • Security Essentials is a new free antivirus from Microsoft. Free for all users.
  • Comodo offers free Antivirus, Firewall and other applications for Microsoft Windows. Free for all users.
  • Housecall is a free online virus scanner from Trend Micro.
  • BitDefender Online Scanner is free-to-use. BitDefender also produces the DefenderPro line of security software.
  • ActiveScan is a free online scanner from Panda Security. Panda also produces a line of commercial security applications and the free Cloud Antivirus.
  • Symantec, makers of Norton Antivirus and related products. Norton versions 2009 and newer are much improved over earlier ones.
  • Network Associates, makers of McAfee Viruscan and related products. Stinger is their free utility for cleaning specific, common viruses. Their Managed Antivirus product is a good choice if you have several computers or have a business and need 'install it-and-forget it' simplicity.
  • Sunbelt Kerio is a free-to-use firewall for Windows (has a free version and a paid version with extra features). Windows XP and newer has a basic software-based firewall built in.

Looking for Antivirus software for Windows 98 or Windows Me? You're running out of choices! BitDefender Antivirus v10 still supports these older versions of Windows, and may just be the only one left that does. There are no free Antivirus products still available, and still kept up-to-date, for Windows 98 or Me.

  • Windows Media Player - WMP10 is a recommended upgrade for Windows XP users, as it adds mp3 file support (WMP11 and WMP12 found in Vista and Windows 7, respectively, already support mp3 files). When ripping audio to wma files, be sure to disable automatic copy protection.
